About the artist
Sergey Shekhovtsov is a Russian painter and sculptor. Born in Salsk (1969).

A graduate of the Surikov Institute, he studied monumental painting under Nikolai Andronov, one of the representatives of the "severe style".

However, soon Shekhovtsov's love for making objects led him to sculpture, moreover, made from "poor" materials – the artist chose foam plastic as his main medium. Living in Moscow in the 1990s, he painted canvases in the spirit of the transavantgarde and lived in the legendary Baumanskaya St. squat of the "Art or Death" group. When the curator of the exhibition, Konstantin Bokhorov, suggested that all the participants should create something atypical for themselves for the last exhibition before eviction, Shekhovtsov made his first sculptural object. Since then Shekhovtsov has been creating sculptures out of foam plastic (porolon), using adhesive tape and spray-can paint. Sculptures made of "poor" materials became Shekhovtsov's hallmark and even earned him the nickname – "Porolon".

Shekhovtsov's works are a blend of his schooling in the "severe style", the love of images of mass culture (mainly cinema) and the search for answers to the fundamental questions of the plastic arts.
In 2004, Shekhovtsov's installation "Cinema" represented Russia at the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 2013, Sergey Shekhovtsov designed the prize statuette of the annual award for "The Art Newspaper Russia": a foam plastic statuette of the Big Ben and Kremlin Spasskaya clock towers intersecting, "which emphasises Russia's synchronisation with the world art process".

Sergey Shekhovtsov represented Russia at the 2009 Venice Biennale with his project "Motorcyclist". This spectacular foam plastic sculpture resembles a still frame of a motorcyclist crashing at full speed through a brick wall and frozen in mid-air.

Shekhovtsov's works are in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA) and the Multimedia Art Museum in Moscow (MMAM), as well as in private collections in Russia, Europe and North America. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions. In 2014, the artist's solo exhibition was held at the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow).
Sergey Shekhovtsov's exhibition "Moscow Land"
30 января - 29 февраля
The project "Moscow Land" is both an imitation and a criticism of the high life, a longing for it and a jibe at its superficiality. The punchy attractive colours of the works, as if borrowed from city advertising, are both eye-catching and in their sham repellent. For the first time in a long time Sergey Shekhovtsov will display a wall sculpture – new pieces made from polyurethane. They contain motley images of mass consumption, simple and familiar household materials and objects.
Sergey Shekhovtsov's happening "RIOT" l 2019
12 december - 11 february
The project makes a parody of the reaction to Art, turning it into an enjoyable happening. In portraying the rioters and imitating the results of their attack on the exhibits, Shekhovtsov creates a kind of antidote for them. Paradoxically, this act also becomes an artistic statement. We invite your participation in this event.
